With a crew consisting of Kas vd Merwe (Owner of Black Watch SA), Hannes and Michael Duvenhage, Edwin and Sandra Thomson and Johnathan Booysen the first ever attempt in Africa was made to fish the new Black Watch 34FB for Marlin on 12/10/2003. Within a couple of hours, on the first strike, 257lb black marlin, was successfully hooked up on a Williamson lure and landed by the skilful team, with Hannes Duvenhage on the chair and Edwin at the helm

Maiden attempt - first marlin!

This early success was followed up on the next outing on 16/11/2003 when Black Watch took the prize for the heaviest fish and second boat in the annual Dorado competition of the Richards Bay Ski-boat club.

Saturday 22/11/2003 was little different. Shortly after losing a fine 80 kg+ Yellow fin to the props with the leader already in hand, this 38.2kg specimen was landed and put Black Watch on the challenge board with the third species in 4 outings!

This 94,4 kg Striped marlin was boated to enter in the Captain Morgan challenge and won one of the coveted trips in 2005. To date, this remains the biggest Striped Marlin caught out of Richards bay

94,4kg Stripey - Capt Morgan Winner

This feisty Black marlin was our 7th marlin from 9 outings and was succesfully released to live another day after giving us a fantasic display

Edwin went into action ligtning fast to remove the chaingang hooks from this tagged sailie prior to release.(one of 3 hooked up on the same day)

Sadly the largest, that would have certainly sent his wife Sandra off to Hemingways later in 2005,, came off in the ensuing chaos

She made up for this though, by releasing a potential Ladies SA record Blue Marlin on Sunday 22 Feb 2004 in an exhibition of great skill and dedication to conservation

Christmas came early for us in 2006 when first after a 2 1/2 hour fight, during which two anglers got wasted, we popped an 80 lb line and lost a very big fish. 1/2 an hour later though, we hooked up this Blue of 270kg which put the younger angler straight back into the chair for yet another 2 1/2 hours!

During the fight, an even bigger fish, all lit up swam right up to the boat, went past the transom and continued to lazily fin on the surface alongside the boat, hardly 5 meters away, for a couple of minutes

In the process we smashed the local record that have been standing since 1999 and made one charter guest very happy!.

270 kg Blue - new record for Richards Bay

Just two days later, after a charterer cancelled, we decided to go fish with friends. After getting underway only after 12 we had barely put lines out when we hooked up this one! This fish went ballistic, made a big turn and came straight at the boat before we even had the lines cleared. For a moment it looked as it was going to jump straight into the boat but managed to dive underneath it wit only a few meters to spare. Another 2 1/2 hours and some very anxious moments later we managed to plane the then dead fish up from the deep on 80 lb line

316 kg Blue - another new record for Richards Bay

During the 2005 Richards Bay Bonanza we won our charter group the biggest Tuna (Biggest fish other than the overall winner) prize with this 64+kg beuty

Needless to say, they have already booked for 2007!

Shortly after our success with the two big Blue Marlin, we captured this fine 74,5kg Yellowfin Tuna and fishing with Hennie kaufman in the chair a few days later, lost another of well over 100kg right at the boat after a titanic 2 1/2 hour battle on 130 lb gear.

By popular demand our brand new demonstration boat, a 34ft Fly bridge named “BLACK WATCH” which is fully equipped with 130lb, 80lb, 50lb and 30lb tackle, is now available for executive charters to parties (4 max) passionate about big-game fishing.
